Should you wait till noon before you book an air ticket that is not on sale?

Airlines compete with each other for market share and revenue and hence it is only natural for them to adjust their prices based on their competitors’.

SpiceJet offer on Feb 1st:

On the 1st of February 2017, SpiceJet started a fare sale with tickets starting Rs. 888. Even though it came as a surprise to our fare sale prediction algorithm, it was a genuine offer when compared to the pre-sale prices as we discussed in our SpiceJet offer analysis post. Somewhere before noon on the 1st Feb, Indigo too matched the sale and came up with its own Rs. 888 offer. Had you booked an Indigo flight early morning on 1st Feb, you would have missed out on the sale!

SpiceJet offers extension:

The SpiceJet fare sale was initially set to end on 5th Feb 2017. On 6th Feb morning, Indigo pulled up its fares to pre-offer levels but SpiceJet extended its offer till 7th Feb 2017. Once again, Indigo reacted to this offer extension by pulling down the fares and extending its earlier offer of Rs. 888 sometime before noon yesterday. Again, just like the case on 1st Feb, had you booked an Indigo flight early morning on 6th Feb, you would have missed out on the sale extension!

Remember, Indigo was on a sale from 26th to 29th Jan 2017. SpiceJet during this period was on a low fare band but not on an announced fare sale.

Our take on this trend:

Any time you observe a fare sale by a particular airline, it is prudent to expect a reactionary sale from the competitors. So if you are booking a flight that is currently not on offer (because say, the route that you want to fly is not serviced by the airline that is on offer), it is good to just wait till noon to check if your airline does a reactionary price drop.

Remember, this will be applicable only during 1st or 2nd day of an offer by any airline. Beyond the 2nd day, you may accept that the airline of your choice has taken a decision not to match the offer in the market. Also, if you are booking a flight on an airline that is on sale, there is no better time than early morning!

Never miss out on an offer!

Fare sale alert: An unannounced airfare sale on Vistara?

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.

We applied this duck test (airfare sale test) on the airfares today morning and our algorithms have picked up a sale on Vistara. We checked their official website to confirm, but there was no information on the same! We rechecked our numbers manually and it still looks like a sale. And guess what? This even betters their declared airfare sale that happened during end of last year! So here is our Fare sale alert and analysis on this Vistara sale.

Is it really on sale?

Out of the 109 domestic routes of Vistara that we track, we could find fares dropping on 104 routes when compared to yesterday’s prices. Sectors like Delhi – Guwahati, Mumbai – Guwahati, Goa – Mumbai, etc., have seen more than a 30% drop in prices today. So yes, it is indeed a fare sale.

 Did we predict this sale?

As you are aware, we have a fare sale barometer (check all airline numbers here) for each airline. Based on that, yesterday’s Unfarescore for Vistara was 39.1 (anything above 50 is a chance of fare sale). So technically, it did not breach our cut-off for a sale prediction. We wonder if this was a tactical sale by Vistara (they didn’t announce this as a sale). The index today for Vistara is 0.0. So hurry!

Compared to earlier offers

Vistara came up with a fare sale around the end of last year 2016. This sale is better than the earlier offer.

Where are the low prices?

Given that the discounts are available only on a limited number of seats, it is important that you act fast and book your tickets at the earliest. In order to help you easily find out the dates on which these low fares are available, we will be adding a tool soon to our app – Unfare. How to predict an airfare sale in India

All days are created equal. But some are more equal that others.

Have you noticed that booking a flight ticket on some days are better than others? Airlines come up with airfare sales at seemingly random intervals. But what if I told you that a great sale can be predicted?

Booking ahead may not always be the smartest option:

Let’s say, you have planned a trip and are to fly in about 3 months time. When you go to book your flight, how do you know you are getting the lowest fares? Even though you are searching for an advance purchase, the airline may be in a period of high fares before going into an airfare sale. You could actually lose out by booking ahead, only to find that a week later, the airline has declared an airfare sale!

Finding the better days to book your flight:

In order to determine how good or bad the airfare is for any given day, you need to know where the airfare stands against the scale of low airfares for that airline. I know, not an easy task to track so many airfares, is it?

Introducing UnfareScore:

UnfareScore is a dynamic index with a scale of 0-100. For any given airline, a score of below 50, signifies a good deal. Anything above 50, indicated that you should consider waiting for the airfare sale. Of course, this only applies when you have at least 45 days to your flight. Also, for specific airfare predictions, you can use the Unfare prediction tool.

UnfareScore is a free feature of Unfare that also provides details on how many days it has been since the last airfare sale, average number of days for an airfare sale, etc. Do check it out today!

What’s coming up in Unfare?

It’s been a while since my previous post and obviously there are quite a lot of things to update. Firstly, we have added 10 new airports into the app which takes the total airports to 20 and the total flight routes to 198! Again, we are India focussed and that will be our forte.

A lot of tweaks were carried out on the algorithm. Given that these are predictions, the tweaks need time to get validated. So over these 7months, the data has grown really big. And that was a challenge but we were able to overcome all that. Unfare was built to scale.

Apart from the changes under the hood, we also carried out some design changes. Our earlier homepage was the search page. We understood that people who landed on our homepage were not aware of the features of Unfare. This was no ordinary airfare search engine. So we decided to add more details into our homepage. Check out the new look here.

In the new year, we look forward to adding many new features to the Unfare app. Some of them that we are currently working on are given below:

  1. FareScore of the Day” – an index that indicates the chance of a discount sale by an airline.
  2. Track Airfares” – a feature that will enable the user to track a particular route for a given flight date and receive alerts when the fare/ prediction changes.
  3. Upcoming Fare Hike Alert” – alerts the user to any upcoming trend of fare hikes along with the approximate date of said hike.
  4. Fly Away” – alerts the user to “all-time-low” fares for a given city.
  5. Model updates” – alerts as we go about tweaking the algorithm.

We look forward to releasing these features in the coming days. Do let us know if you have any feature request or ideas in the comment section below.

Under the hood: How does Unfare work?

Ever since the launch of the app – Unfare, I have been asked this question; how does it work? So to answer that, I decided to write a post about it.

Everyday morning, Unfare gets a price feed for all the routes and dates that is in scope and stores it into a database. It then automatically runs a few processes on this data which updates information like the “fair price”, price list of last 7 days, etc. It also updates the “training data” with the necessary predictor variables for the algorithm. Once all these processes are complete, it will then hand it over to the algorithm.

After completing a few sanity checks, the algorithm updates itself with the data from the flights that had taken off the previous day. This ensures that any mistake in its previous prediction is taken into account. Once updated, the algorithm runs in stages. Each stage taking in new training data compared to the previous set. This ensures that the algorithm improves its accuracy and at the same time is generic to predict on new data.

Once the algorithm is ready to predict, it is fed with that day’s flight and price information. The prediction along with the confidence levels are stored in the database which are then made available to anyone who uses the Unfare app.

The beauty of this workflow is that it is 100% automated and requires no manual intervention from my side. Even if the workflow is disrupted at any point, it will auto-restart from the same point of disruption.

A few technical details:

  • Cloud computing service: Amazon EC2
  • OS: Linux
  • Server: Apache
  • Database: MySQL
  • Statistical tool: R project

I will do another post on the logic or the hack that Unfare exploits in the coming days. Stay tuned!
